they were just in South Bend this weekend.
if you missed them, you really missed out.

Northwest Indiana was the only local music scene I had growing up. Touring bands that came through the VFW halls, art spaces, and coffee shops showed me a whole new side of what music could be. Simple Days is coming to NWI with the music side in mind first, rather than a side note. Places like this are the most essential gateways to opening younger kids up to the DIY scene.

Bobby and Dan know exactly what I’m talking about, and John has been talking about doing this since we met in 2008. Everyone in the region needs to do their part in promoting, playing, and getting coffee here to keep it going strong.

fantastic venue.
go support what they’re doing.

April 23 2012

(the above video was shot and created by Bryce Millikin at Relax, It’s Just Coffee on Saturday April 21st)

an update on the “we’re not leaving home” tour thus-far.

day 1:
Crown Point, Indiana with The Blue Letter. nearly six years after meeting them and 3 years since we last saw them, we finally got a chance to hangout with and play with The Blue Letter again. for anyone who thinks that we are a loud band, they’ve never seen anything as loud or impressive as the wall of amps that makes up TBL’s backline. they played all new material off of their upcoming album, Love Is Not Control. the crowd was small, but the show was a lot of fun.

day 2:
house show in Kokomo, Indiana with South Of Brisbane and The Blue Letter. because of the smallness of the living room/dining room that we were playing in, each band had to load in one at a time. this also meant that all possible room in the house was filled with bodies. another really fun show. then TBL headed off from the show bound for Ithaca, NY and our friends who book at GreenStar.

day 3:
Mansfield, OH with The La De Les. we met these guys (and girl) about 9 months ago at Cornerstone and they blew us away. when they asked us to come to OH and play their cd release, we jumped at the chance. we rolled in after nearly a five hour drive and loaded everything. we were a little worried about the turnout as the facebook event only had about 30 people listed as attending. by the time the show actually got underway, however, the basement of Relax, It’s Just Coffee was packed. (we were told the final count was 121 people in the door) we took the stage second, after a local band called La Bellafonte (they were also quite good). it was good to look out and see people really react to the music. of course, The La De Les was the headliner. they blew everyone away. three part harmony, dualing guitar parts (played by one guitarist), electronic beats (but not in a techno sort of way.), just overall shoegaze/ambient goodness.

after the show, we stayed with them and talked about all kinds of things. (though, to be honest, music really was pretty central to a lot of the conversation.)

anyways… we recently started talking about doing a 10 day tour down to Florida and back, and we might end up doing that WITH The La De Les and Keyoung (our friend Jeff, who does spoken word.) this would be late summer/early fall-ish probably.
and on the way we’d hook up with The Blue Letter for a couple days in the Virginia regions, and probably meet up with some other friends as well.

today was a day off, then tomorrow we hit things again as Chin Up! in our hometown of South Bend with The Rose Funeral and The World We Knew. then tuesday we will be in Goshen (still as Chin Up!) with Those Who Fear and The Burial. wednesday we have off, and then analecta will be playing with Kid Valiant at (of all places) Urban Outfitters over by Notre Dame Campus. the show is free and music will be around 6-ish.

other news:
all our shirts will be going on sale soon. we are getting very low on most of our shirts and want to clear them out soon to make way for new merch. also, we still have that 7” coming (on Chorus Of One Records).
if you haven’t picked up a copy of Janus Bifrons yet PLEASE DO! we will have them at ALL our shows coming in the near future.

anyways, here’s some links for you to check out:

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

as many of you know, in the next couple of months we will be releasing a 7” split with Chin Up! called Cats.

we have one song on it (We Stood On Top Of The Mountain) and Chin Up! has four songs.

today we are releasing the first song off the album. it is a Chin Up! song (you’ll have to buy the record to get the analecta song)

it will be released on vinyl by Chorus Of One Records (and there will be some color options) and on tape by Honest Empire Records.

here’s the vinyl cover. (artwork will vary for special versions and will also be changed somewhat for the tape release)

March 21 2012

so, in the next few weeks, we will be updating our merch supply.

we are currently running low on shirts and all that we have now will not be re-printed.
so get what’s left of them while you can here: at our storenvy.

you can also buy our new album there, as well as a slew of buttons, stickers and old doctor!doctor! merch as well.

we have three new shirt designs that we will be debuting this spring/summer as well as possibly a v-neck, some patches and maybe more stickers… we also have that 7” coming too.
one of the designs is by Brian Morgante of Deadhorse, the other two are by neverwhere sound and design studio.

March 19 2012

updates and news and all that sort of thing.

all right everybody….
we need your help with something.

we’re really trying to get our name out there and have people listen to our music (we’d just be happy with people hearing it, they don’t have to buy it, though that would be nice.)
we’ve tried to get some reviews done on the album to help with this, but most of the sites we’ve submitted to have ignored us.

there have been three sites that have said some very nice things about the album that you should check out:

The O’Daddy Factor
Noisography Reviews
Is This Revolutionary?

if you know anywhere else we should submit, PLEASE let us know.
we’re trying to book shows and get out there as much as possible.

if you DON’T have a physical copy of the album yet, you can pick one up from us at a show or online via our storenvy or from our label Honest Empire Records.

we are just starting to write new material (already) for a new set of concept albums. (but for now, we’re going to keep that whole project under our hats)

we also have new merch in the works. we have three new shirt designs including one by Brian Morgante of Deadhorse, a new sticker design and maybe patches or back-patches as well. we will be posting all of this very soon.
right now we have a little time off.
our next booked show is going to be in Goshen at the Goshen Theatre on thursday April 19th with our good friends in The Blue Letter. if you live ANYWHERE near here, please come to this show. they are just out on a full US tour to support their brand new album Love Is Not Control and from what we’ve heard of it? it’s fantastic and should NOT be missed live. then we will be caravaning to Ohio to play with both The Blue Letter and The La De Les at their cd release show, so… OHIO FRIENDS COME HANG OUT! (this means you Jeff, David, Allyson, The Richards… etc.)

Janus Bifrons (an explanation)

all right,
now that the album is out, it’s probably time to explain it a bit.

for example “what does Janus Bifrons mean” and “what’s with the poetry bits?”

that’s what this blog is for.

we’ll start at the beginning.

Janus Bifrons is a concept album. (wait, how can a post-rock album be a concept album? you say?) well. it does tell a story in much the same way that a soundtrack does.

this album is the story of 3 people who leave the city in search of themselves, only to discover that what they were looking for all along was inside them the whole time.
they travel through the four elements (earth, wind, fire and water… in that order) on their journey.
their travels are loosely joined together through the use of a three part narrative poem. each section of the poem is read by one of the people in the group.

the album artwork and name also figure into this idea.

the cover is a representation of the head of Janus Bifrons, or the roman god of time. he sees into both the past and the future, and since the story is circular (in relation to time) it seemed an appropriate naming device. the cover also has the alchemy symbols for the four elements on it.

the back cover has a key on it (because Janus is also the god of doors and locks.)

the inside cover has an image of the alchemy symbol of unity.

now a brief breakdown of the story in relation to the tracklisting.

1. we set out into the night
this one is pretty straight forward. our three main characters leave on their journey.

2. trying to map the horizon
this song represents earth. in particular it represents the desert. much like the empty expanses in parts of texas and wyoming and places like that.

3. there is life here
this is the first narration (read by Ryan Rado of Worker.) it covers leaving the city and travelling across the desert towards the skyline.

4. just don’t look down
because this song is about wind, we tried to give it the feeling of being more ethereal … perhaps with a feel of flying.

5. as the light bends and shifts
the second narration (as read by Leanor Ortega-Til of Five Iron Frenzy.)

6. the earth shook and the sky turned black
this song was actually inspired by the story of the great San Francisco fire in the early 20th century. there was an early morning earthquake in the city and because there wasn’t much in the way of electricity yet, most people still used oil lamps. the earthquake caused the lamps to fall and, essentially, set the city on fire. it got so bad that they had to dynamite portions of the city in order to stop the fire from spreading.

7. moving to the beat of the unseen
this is the last narration (as read by Nathaniel South of Lune.)

8. it could have been the greatest escape
this was actually the first piece that we wrote for the album, and it was what started the whole idea. obviously this song is about water. it is the culmination of the albums journey and we really wanted it to convey a sense of hope and determination.

9. the secret lies within
we decided to do something slightly different for a closing track and used more acoustic instruments for this track. (hand drums, acoustic guitar, piano, glockenspiel.)

hopefully this will clear up any confusion about the album?
if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

----------------------------------------------------

analecta is an effort to create artistic, inventive music in the vein of instrumental post-rock and post-metal drawing on the collective minds of Calvin Maloney, Kevin Kingery, and Patrick Quigley. Previous experience in bands like doctor!doctor! and Sleep Patterns have brought members together to push each other to grow musically and professionally as artists. In the more than 30 shows within its first six months of existence, analecta has had the pleasure to play with bands such as Native; Paucity; Koji; If These Trees Could Talk; Mose Giganticus; Listener; Sohns; Deadhorse; The Reptilian; Into it, Over it; and many more very talented local and regional musicians. Analecta invites you to come experience moving, modern music created live with feeling and exploration from the comforts of traditional post-rock to the outer reaches of non-traditional instrumentation, electronics, textures, and sounds.
